The castle of Naxos was built by the Venetians during the 13th century. At the same place there used to be the ancient acropolis. The castle consists mainly of the walls of the medieval houses. It was not only a place of residence, but administrative, educational and religious centre of the Venetians. Nowadays, in the castle one can visit the archaeological museum and find shops, cafes and tavernas.
