Melissani Cave

Description

Melissani Cave is near Karavomilos. Part of the roof is fallen in the lake underneath due to an earthquake, thus two sections have been created, one open and one covered. The tour is by boat. At the lake there is a small island, where antiquities where found and are now at the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli. The cave was used for ritual purposes in antiquity, devoted to the god Pan and the Nymphs, which is why the cave is also called Cave of the Nymphs.
